How the number is made.

The circuit is forty cities. Ten are permanent capitals and carry a standing weight all year. Thirty are seasonal and carry a weight only in the months the calendar puts them in play. Those weights come from the published calendar of the circuit: the fairs, the regattas, the races, the sales, the summits, and the rooms that fill around them.

Each day the score blends this month's weight toward next month's by how far into the month we are. The result is a number from 0 to 100. The rings on the mark are that number in seven steps.

The state is read from the level and the slope. Opening when the weight is high and still rising early in the window. Open at full weight. Closing when the weight is high and the next month drops it. Dispersing in the month after a peak. Flat when a permanent capital sits below its usual line. Quiet otherwise.

The wire records state changes only. Nothing on the wire is a forecast.

The twelve dimensions of the Index are scored by the operator and layered onto the calendar read as they are entered. Where a dimension has not been scored, the calendar read stands alone.
